Water Valley Home Burns

I was in the office this afternoon studying when I heard a strange popping noise. It sounded like there was something rolling around in the dryer and I knew the dryer wasn't on (why would I do laundry when I can read Beowulf?), so I went to investigate. From the laundry room window I could see a huge cloud of smoke coming from the street behind our house. As I looked closer, I could see huge flames through our bamboo forest. Since being nosy runs in my family (don't ya'll be offended, you know it's true), I jumped in the car to check it out. The house across the street from the house directly behind us was in flames. I got a couple of pictures with my cell phone camera, but by the time I got there, the blaze was mostly under control. I did, however, see the guy from our local paper on the scene with his camera, so I'll give you all the details on Thursday when the paper comes out.

I have a picture of the DEBATE HALL! It's not the best picture, since there aren't supposed to be pictures taken in the area, so the camera had to be hidden to avoid detection. However, it's still a picture worthy of display in my Debate Week blogs!

Morning Update on Debate

I just talked to my friend, Emily, who is interning with CBS this week for a debate class she is taking. She said there are camera crew all over the place. I already saw a CNN report from the front of the Gertrude Ford Center this morning. I'm getting ready to go into town and check it all out. Of course I'll have the camera, recording it all for posterity.

On CNN.com earlier, I read that McCain wants to postpone the VP debate scheduled for Oct. 2 in Missouri. He is suggesting that the first presidential debate be delayed until that date, and should occur on the date of the scheduled VP debate. He then wants to have the VP debate between Palin and Biden here in Oxford at "a later date".

Vice Chancellor Gloria Kellum was just interviewed by CNN. She says that they are planning for the debate to go on as scheduled. The interviewer asked her if they were willing to let Obama talk and be questioned during the debate if McCain doesn't show, and she said they are not creating a contingency plan. They fully expect McCain to show up.

So, as I am posting all my pictures of the debate hubbub going on in Oxford, a friend calls me to tell me to turn on the news. I learn that McCain has decided to put his campaign on "hold" to deal with the economic crisis. Will there be a debate? Stay tuned...

Making History, Part Three

The media is all over the place, interviewing practically anyone willing to talk. This guy was from the Commercial Appeal. I'm not sure why he had a video camera, since he's a print journalist, but he was interviewing people who were volunteering for the Oxford Tourism Commision. Volunteers are everywhere, making sure the tourists know about all the sights, stores, and restaurants in town.

The city of Oxford has been trying to get everyone in the community involved in debate related activities. The school children have been making art that is being displayed in the windows of almost every store on the square.

Making History, Part One

This morning when I got out of class I headed for the square to take pictures of all the preparations going on for the debate. Almost every store on the square has patriotic decorations and window displays.

David's First Bus Ride

When the game started, David and I took the shuttle back to our car. It was the first time he had ever been on a bus and we had the WHOLE bus to ourselves! David loved it, of course. But I think he had a better time on the double decker bus with Grandpa.

I don't have any idea what the fascination is with the laundry basket, but he LOVES it. He just sits in it and watches television.

David's First Day of School

David didn't do very well for the first several weeks of school. He didn't want to go and it was a real chore getting him out the door every morning.


Today, however, he actually said that he WANTED to go to school!!!!!! Hooray!

It's Been a While

Sorry guys. I know I haven't posted in a while. I have SO much going on with school right now that the only thing Stuart sees at night is my head either behind a book, or behind the computer, researching a book. I cut my hours back at work, so hopefully I'll have a little more free time. I need to get the pictures from Kala's b-day party posted, the pictures from the Grove at the Ole Miss/Memphis game and the picture of David's first day at school. I promise I will try to do this in the very near future. Just stay tuned.

Camping with the Seamans

Here are ALL the pictures from the camping trip we took with Stu's family on the 5th and 6th of July. We went to Roosevelt State Park in Morton, MS for some fun in the sun.

For those of you that haven't met Katie's boyfriend, Robert, he's the guy that isn't any of the rest of us in all these pictures. David really took to him. They had a good time hanging out together. They played on the playground, watched the ducks, went for a canoe ride, and went down the water slide together.

Speaking of the water slide, can ya'll believe that thing? It was SO cool! And at a state park? Really? It had it's own little pool that you landed in, and there was a separate pool for actually swimming.

We had a really good time. I thought that I would DESPISE camping just b/c it's usually so gross and outdoorsy and there isn't a shower or any other bathroom fixtures...however, I have LOVED camping with the family. I always have a really great time. I look forward to going again soon!

Our friends had a party at their house on the Fourth. The kids played in the pool and had a great time. David got to play with sparklers (I'm sure a heartwarming moment for his FATHER-his mother was SCARED TO DEATH!) and he had a good time going in and out of the house through the doggy door. He was so tired that while Daddy and Mr. Nick were shooting off mortars he was sleeping through them on my lap!

I LOVE this picture of Baby Liam, too. He's soooo precious!

New Pictures

I promise I'm going to have new pictures coming soon. The house is clean, David is in daycare, and I have nothing to do. This means that I will be spending endless hours on the computer, wasting my day away in Internetland. So stay tuned.

The "Real" McCain

So, I'm not sure how many of you are actually AWARE of this...HOWEVER...

Abortion and gay marriage are NOT the MOST important issues of the upcoming election, and if your preachers are telling you they ARE, then you need to find a preacher who actually keeps up with the news (or one who actually has a brain in their skull). If you think that McCain is any more intellegent that Bush, you've got another thing coming, and voting for this idiot is doing nothing but screwing us ALL over for another 8 years.
